NOAA: Name Heat Waves after Oil Companies!

NOAA: Name Heat Waves after Oil Companies!

The Issue

Meteorologist Guy Walton has begun a new convention of naming heat waves, similar to the naming of hurricanes and major storms. Walton's names are special, however: he's naming heat waves after oil companies. That makes the current heat dome over Texas part of (it's July 21, '23 as I write this) Heat Wave Chevron, the third named heat wave of the year.

This is an excellent idea, if a bit whimsical. All of the major petroleum companies have known for years that their product was driving climate change, and they  acted essentially the same way that tobacco products acted toward cancer deaths in the previous century: they distracted, obfuscated, denied, and ignored. They are more to blame for climate change than any other actor.

Therefore I respectfully request that NOAA, along with all private meteorological companies and reports, immediately adopt Guy Walton's naming conventions for all current and future heat waves. It's long past time for these climate chickens to come home to roost.
