No to London Border Tax for Sevenoaks

No to London Border Tax for Sevenoaks
In a bid to push Transport for London's finances back into the black, Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, suggested extending the ULEZ to the outer London borders by introducing a fee of between £3.50 and £5.50 (depending on the vehicle) for each time a driver enters one of the Greater London boroughs.
If approved, this plan will significantly affect Sevenoaks' residents who will be subjected to the charge each time they drive into the London boroughs of Bexley, Bromley and Croydon as many of us do.
An estimated 1.3 million drivers enter London each day from counties such as Surrey, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire and the fee would be in addition to the £15 congestion charge and £12.50 ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ).
This tax would be crippling for many businesses. Employees including key workers could face a £1000 increase to their annual commuting costs. Some people may face social isolation due to the increased cost of visiting family and friends.
The climate and nature emergency demands significant change and, reducing the number of petrol and diesel cars on our roads is undoubtedly necessary. However, charging those who are already struggling to survive is not the answer.
It's unfair to lay this suggested fully on Sadiq Khan's shoulders as his hand has been somewhat forced by Boris Johnson's lack of public transport funding. However, we hope that Sadiq Khan will scrap the idea as it literally kicks the problem down the road.
