NO to Cemetery ! YES to community serving projects!

NO to Cemetery ! YES to community serving projects!
The Issue
We, the residents of Mission Del Lago and the South Side of San Antonio, are standing together to oppose the construction of a new cemetery/crematory across from our neighborhood.
This project would:
Lower home values in our community by up to 25%.
Pay nothing in taxes, since cemeteries are tax-exempt—leaving schools, roads, and services with less funding.
Increase traffic and safety risks along Loop 410.
Attract crime and vandalism, as has been reported at other cemeteries in San Antonio.
Bring environmental and maintenance issues that will affect our families for generations.
Hurt our quality of life, creating emotional and psychological discomfort for families raising children nearby.
Duplicate what already exists—there are multiple cemeteries and crematories just miles away (Mission Burial Park South, San Jose Burial Park, El Carmen, and others).
---
What Our Community Actually Needs
The South Side deserves community-serving projects—not another cemetery. Currently, most public amenities are miles away from Mission Del Lago:
The nearest public library (Mission Branch Library) is nearly 5 miles away.
The nearest major city park (Acequia Park) is over 6 miles away.
The nearest public swimming pool (Roosevelt Pool) is about 10–12 miles away.
Other large civic amenities are even further, forcing families to travel across town.
Instead of a cemetery, we ask the City to consider investments that serve the living:
✅ A new library or learning center
✅ A public park with playgrounds and trails
✅ A community pool or recreation facility
✅ A nature preserve or cultural space
---
Our Demand
We call on the City of San Antonio and the case manager overseeing this project to reject the cemetery/crematory proposal and work with residents to create developments that reflect our community’s true needs.
Mission Del Lago families want growth that uplifts—not projects that devalue and diminish our neighborhood.
Please add your name and join us in protecting our community. Together, we can send a clear message: No cemetery here. Yes to real community investment.
