No Pay, No Taxes: Fair Relief for Workers During Government Shutdowns

No Pay, No Taxes: Fair Relief for Workers During Government Shutdowns
The Issue
When a natural disaster strikes, the government recognizes the hardship and creates tax codes accordingly. Individuals affected by hurricanes, wildfires, floods, and other federally declared disasters are often granted tax relief — including deductions, deadline extensions, and financial accommodations — because the disruption is beyond their control.
A government shutdown is no different for the workers directly impacted.
Federal employees, contractors, and others whose pay is halted during a shutdown face immediate financial hardship. Mortgages and rent remain due. Utilities, insurance, car payments, and childcare costs do not pause. Late fees accumulate. Credit scores suffer. Families are forced into uncertainty — not because of economic conditions or natural catastrophe, but because of political gridlock.
This petition calls for clear and equitable reform:
For every day in which a lapse in funding occurs (government shutdown), any individual whose pay is directly suspended or delayed shall be exempt from federal income taxes for that specific period of time.
This proposal would:
• Provide automatic, proportional financial relief during shutdown periods.
• Offset penalties and financial damage caused by delayed income.
• Treat shutdowns as the economic disruptions they are.
• Create meaningful accountability, as prolonged shutdowns would carry measurable fiscal consequences for the government itself.
When hurricanes or wildfires disrupt livelihoods, we offer relief because it is just and humane. When political impasses disrupt livelihoods, we should demand the same consideration.
Government workers should not be forced to fund the consequences of dysfunction that places their own income at risk.
This policy is not about politics — it is about fairness, stability, and responsible governance. This is about protecting working families and promoting accountability — and we invite every American who believes in fairness to stand together and support this petition.
If disaster relief applies to natural catastrophes, it should apply to economic ones as well.
No Pay. No Taxes. Fair Is Fair.
