Don't stop this clinical trial, @JazzPharma! MANY BABIES WITH BRAIN DAMAGE NEED IT

The Issue

It seems like a miracle. However, it was science.

At birth, my daughter was not receiving oxygen for 7 minutes (hypoxia), she was admitted to the ICU in a very serious condition and we did not know if she could survive. If she managed to live, the prognosis was very harsh: she would practically be in a vegetative state. She would have very serious motor problems and she would never walk.

Within hours of birth, at the San Carlos Clinical Hospital in Madrid we were offered to participate in a clinical trial with cannabidiol (along with hypothermia), a substance that has shown therapeutic potential to treat neurological conditions. Faced with a prognosis of cerebral palsy for our daughter, we had nothing to lose, so we agreed to participate.

Thanks to this clinical trial, today my daughter is 3 years old and she leads an almost normal life. Although she needs prosthetics and a postural suit, she can now walk. You can't imagine the gratitude I feel towards the hospital and the researchers leading this study. They have literally given us our lives back.

Today we know with certainty that in that clinical trial my daughter was not a placebo and she received the real treatment, such incredible advances happened thanks to this hospital study. A treatment that hopefully many children with brain damage can benefit from.

However it won't be like that.

When the study was already in a very advanced phase, the pharmaceutical company Jazz Pharmaceuticals has stopped it, denying hope to families like ours who have seen the benefits of the treatment first hand. Disrupting this research is a giant barrier to medical progress.

We urgently need this study to continue. It is vital to the lives of many children who need it >>> Please support us with your signature to ask Jazz Pharmeceuticals to resume studying CBD for brain injuries like my daughter's. Or at least allow the hospital to use the patent to continue the work.

The more signatures we gather the more chances children like my daughter have to drastically improve their quality of life.

These are not just words from a grateful mother, it is “pure science”, find here information published by Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals about the benefits of this clinical trial.

Full information on CBD is explained here Frontiers | Cannabidiol for the Treatment of Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury.

Making reference to this article published by the community of Madrid, it is important to highlight the following:

"The results of the research (...) demonstrate in the preclinical phase that the parenteral administration of cannabidiol after the episode reduces brain damage by 50% according to the magnetic resonance and histological tests carried out, and even in 100% according to functional tests or neurological examination, so it would improve or prevent subsequent sequelae in those who suffer from it. (...) On the other hand, no important side effects have been described so far in the administration of cannabidiol in studies carried out in the preclinical phase."

For all these reasons, we ask that the pharmaceutical company Jazz Pharmaceuticals resume the study as soon as possible.

I'm not starting this campaign for my daughter as she already benefited from it. I want to fight so more kids can benefit from it. I feel horrible every time I see a child in a wheelchair, without quality of life, remembering the initial medical prognosis of my daughter.

Let’s unite so that all children who need this treatment like my daughter did, can access it.

Please, sign up.

Thank you on behalf of all families who have a newborn with brain damage. Thank you as well on behalf of those who will be in this terrible situation in the future.
Rebeca.
