Statement from Mike Nahan today: FEDERAL BUDGET The 2017 Federal Budget contains a $1.2 billion bonus infrastructure and job-creating gift to the people of Western Australia, according to Opposition Leader Mike Nahan. After allowing the McGowan Government to reallocate $1.2 billion in Perth Freight Link funding to meet its election promises, the Federal Government has, as a contingent liability within the budget, put a further $1.2 billion on the table for the McGowan Government to have to proceed with PFL. “Mr McGowan has before him the opportunity to demonstrate that he is here to govern for all West Australians,” Dr Nahan said. “Accepting this $1.2 billion gift from the Federal Government and building Roe 8 will also allow the State Government to redirect $233 million earmarked for three stop-gap congestion projects along the Roe 8 route that will no longer be required. “I pledge today that should the McGowan Government do the right thing and go ahead and build this Priority 1 infrastructure, the Opposition will not use it as a political point-scoring opportunity but will stand and applaud the decision.” “Transport Minister Rita Saffioti’s announcement today that construction of the portion of Roe 8 through to Murdoch Drive would continue is a positive sign that this Government recognises the importance of this road.” Dr Nahan said arguments against the Roe 8 extension put by Labor during the State Government election campaign had no valid foundation and did not consider the needs of the wider West Australian community. “A road that links Stirling Highway to the Kwinana Freeway can hardly be called a road to nowhere,” he said. “It is a lie to pretend that Fremantle Port is anywhere near capacity. It will be subject to increasing freight traffic. “Finally, it is verging on criminal to deny the people of Perth’s southern suburbs safe roads.”
