No Octopus Captivity at SEA Discovery Center

The Issue

Urge Western Washington University's aquarium, the SEA Discovery Center in Poulsbo WA, to abandon its plans to acquire and display an octopus in its aquarium. Octopuses are extraordinary, highly intelligent animals capable of problem-solving, experiencing emotions, and forming complex social bonds. Their well-being cannot be ensured in captivity.

Keeping octopuses in captivity for display purposes denies them the freedom to explore, hunt, and interact with their environment in meaningful ways. Studies have shown that octopuses suffer in confined, unnatural settings, leading to stress, boredom, and even premature death.

As a community that values marine education and conservation, we believe there are more ethical and innovative ways to teach the public about the wonders of ocean life without exploiting sentient creatures. Virtual exhibits, interactive displays, and partnerships with marine conservation initiatives can inspire curiosity and respect for marine life without causing harm.

We respectfully call on the SEA Discovery Center to:

  • Cancel plans to acquire and display an octopus.
  • Commit to ethical education by investing in non-exploitative ways to engage the public.
  • Lead by example in promoting compassionate marine conservation practices.

By choosing compassion over captivity, the SEA Discovery Center has the opportunity to be a leader in ethical marine education, inspiring generations to protect and respect ocean life.

Sign this petition to stand with us in urging the SEA Discovery Center to prioritize the well-being of marine animals over entertainment.

Thank you for supporting this critical cause. Together, we can make a difference for octopuses and promote a kinder, more ethical approach to marine education.
