No Hygiene or Harm Reduction programs at William Shore Aquatic Center in Port Angeles, WA
The Issue
The William Shore Aquatic Center in Port Angeles, Washington, is a beloved community hub that caters to families, young children, seniors, the United States Coast Guard, elite athletes, and local high school swim teams. It is a place where the community comes together to enjoy a safe, clean, and vibrant environment that is free of service and law resist individuals. However, developments have raised concerns about the safety and integrity of this tax payer funded Aquatic center due to the lack of transparency regarding Clallam County Department of Health Harm Reduction programs.
The Clallam County Department of Health has initiated various programs that may include the provision of hygiene centers or free shower vouchers for homeless, and service and law resistant individuals. While these programs might be vital for public health and welfare, hygiene access and bathing locations already exist for homeless, and service and law resistant individuals. Hygiene access is available at Serenity House, the Salvation Army and TAFY have facilities and trained staff. The Clallam County Homeless Task Force has $500,000 in document recording fees they can utilize to expand bathing facilities with local non-profit partners.
There are 78 Port Angeles Police reports that document the William Shore Aquatic Center generated far more calls related to social disorder, transient activity, mental health concerns, family disputes, and public safety issues than it did to actual swimming or recreation.
Without proper oversight, potentially leading to an environment littered with used harm reduction paraphernalia such as needles, razors, and drugs. These hazards pose significant risks not only to families and children but also to all patrons who deserve a clean and safe facility.
Please sign this petition to demand that the Clallam Department of Health and the William Shore Memorial Pool Board members Clallam County Commissioners Mike French, Randy Johnson, Port Angeles City Council Members Mark Hodgson and LaTrisha Suggs, and Greg Shields reject a hygiene center and shower voucher program now and in the future.
A publicly funded aquatic center must maintain a safe, family-friendly environment.
Reject any proposal creating a free shower voucher program.
Reject any proposal establishing a hygiene center within the pool district.
Preserve the facility's mission as a recreational, educational, and athletic community resource.
Ensure taxpayer-funded resources remain dedicated to aquatic programs that benefit the entire community.
Its resources should remain focused on swimming, fitness, recreation, and public water safety—not be redirected into services outside its intended purpose.
Sign this petition if you believe the Aquatic Center should remain dedicated to its original mission and the interests of the taxpayers who fund it.
