No Electronic Sign at the Nazareth Memorial Library

The Issue

To our neighbors in Nazareth, Pennsylvania: Did you know that the Nazareth public library is planning to install a new sign containing an LED message board at the corner of Center and New streets? You’ve probably seen LED signs outside places like schools, municipal buildings, fire halls, or churches—illuminated screens that show community announcements.

Our quiet, beautiful neighborhood deserves better than an LED sign that distracts drivers and is out of character for our historic town.

Library officials have voiced their intention to be respectful regarding the size and appearance of the sign. However, we want to be clear that no size of LED display is acceptable in our neighborhood or in such a historic part of Nazareth.

Our concerns:

Distracting to drivers at a busy intersection

During the day, this intersection is extremely busy with school traffic, pedestrians and young drivers. Near misses and rolling stops are unfortunately common here. On behalf of the drivers and walkers, please let us focus on safety and don't add the dangerous distraction of an LED sign.

Out of character for historic Nazareth

The library building, the former Trumbower home, was built in 1927. It is an integral part of the community and is officially recognized as one of Nazareth's historically significant buildings. Across the street from the library is the Whitfield House which dates to 1740. An LED sign would permanently alter the tasteful and historic atmosphere that is a hallmark of Nazareth.

Replaces what already works

We love using the library, and we have multiple ways to stay connected to it—social media, email newsletters, a well-maintained website, and word of mouth. The library already does an excellent job of keeping our community informed through these channels.

More background

  • The sign project was first publicly discussed at a Nazareth Borough Council workshop on April 3.
  • The proposed sign is being funded by a $100,000 gift from an anonymous donor, with the requirement that the funds be used only for a sign.
  • The library has already received PennDOT approval for the sign, and would need Borough Council's approval to proceed.
  • Please see this May 7, 2025, article published by The Morning Call.

Next steps

To our neighbors and library patrons: If you care about keeping this part of Nazareth safe, calm, and historically respectful, please lend your voice by signing this petition. Your signature will indicate that you oppose an electronic message board sign at the Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity.

Please also voice your concerns by speaking with members of borough council and participating in borough meetings. You can find contact information for council members at the Nazareth Borough website.

We respectfully ask members of Nazareth Borough Council to act in the best interest of the community and protect the historic character of the library. Please do not allow an electronic sign to become part of this residential neighborhood. This community is our home, and its preservation matters to us all.
