We were victorious in obtaining a moratorium on business development.
After deliberating for over two hours, the council passed the interim ordinance, which is the moratorium. But, our work is far from over.
Now, the work lies in two places:
1) Support of the council as they undertake comprehensive planning and zoning ordinance changes. This isn't a quick process, nor an easy process, and they need your support at meetings.
2) Educating those who are in favor of the Dollar General as to WHY the decision was made to pass the moratorium.
It is far less about the Dollar General store itself than it is about preserving the long-term future of Grand Marais for both the residents of Grand Marais, the residents of Cook County, and the tourists that supply a great part of our commerce.
Personally, I'll be doing pricing comparison research between DG, Walmart, Amazon.com, Johnson's and Gene's to see how deep the margins are when it comes to the types of items Dollar General carries. I also plan on putting together documentation comparing an average DG with an average resident-owned small business in regards to money kept within the community, taxes paid, as well as other important aspects.
The goal here is education, not one-upmanship. In my not-so-humble opinion, our community doesn't need polarization. We need communication, understanding, and CHANGE so that we can ALL live here comfortably and happily.

Thank you again, for all your hard work! Our town appreciates every bit of it!
