The Issue

A proposal to construct a large-scale data center in Minooka, Il. has recently surfaced. While technological advancements are crucial, it's important to weigh the benefits against the potential negative impacts on our community. Data centers are known for their immense consumption of water and energy resources, creating a significant environmental footprint. Is this the future that we want? Selling off more and more land to corporations and tech billionaires to destroy? It’s never just “one more development”...

City council members from towns across the country, but especially Illinois, are green lighting data centers so frivolously before any regulations can be passed to ensure the safety of the community and environment. We don’t have a solid body of research or insight on the long term impacts of these facilities on the communities that they’re built in. And on top of that we are seeing horror stories about the devastating impacts that other towns are experiencing now that these data centers are up and running. Yet, city councils keep approving MORE data centers.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

This is an extreme risk that we and many other communities are taking, and we have no avenues for accountability if the actions of these corporations end up having catastrophic impacts on our communities.

We NEED to be smarter about this. We need better city planning and zoning. And we need to have more forethought. “More corporate development” shouldn’t be the default setting for city planning, that is just lazy and irresponsible. There are better ways that we can invest in and support this community.

Moreover, the construction and operation of such facilities can lead to increased traffic, noise pollution, and strain on local infrastructure. These changes not only threaten our environment but also the health and well-being of residents. The natural beauty and peacefulness of Minooka could be irrevocably altered, impacting property values and our quality of life.

We implore the local government and planning authorities to evaluate these potential impacts thoroughly and prioritize the long-term welfare of Minooka’s residents over short-term gains. Let us work together to preserve the heart of our town for future generations.

Please sign this petition to voice your opposition to the construction of a data center in Minooka and help protect our beautiful community for years to come. Your support is invaluable.
