No Data Center in Dixie Petition
The Issue
Dixie County is a gem of a town on it's way up with tradition and culture embedded in its history! With the Suwannee River and it's tributaries boasting some of the most beautiful densely packed springs, to the Gulf coast towns sporting some of the best fishing around! The land is also a primary food provider due to agricultural roots from cattle to crops that need to be protected to keep America's food supply local.
With the rise of AI and the need to create more capacity via data centers, money hungry developers have coerced many local municipalities incentivizing them with tax credits and half truths. These buildings have been around for a few decades and were a need to host websites, various applications, and other data via massive servers. With AI only in its infancy and growing the storage capacity is vastly undersized... That is the scary part, it will only continue to spread need more space, more water, more land, more power! We have to pull the plug now and come together to protect the land and the future of our children. The further we dive into the digital AI world the less human we will look and that is not a future aligned with purpose.
These data centers are in large part operating and being constructed with little to no regulation. Florida is the first state to execute a bill SB 484 which gives local body the power to exercise power and responsibility over comprehensive planning and land development regulations relating to large load customers. The dangers of the centers lies in many parts such as direct/in direct water consumption and waste dangers, small modular nuclear reactors shrouded in half truths "clean energy" solutions, infrasound dangers, EMF exposure, thermal pollution, and offering little to the local economy. With Dixie's bread and butter being its natural resources it would be suicide to allow one to be built here.
These are massive, windowless, soul less buildings.. No foot traffic! No street-level activity! No community integration! Compare that to housing, retail, offices. They sterilize valuable urban land that could support housing, economic diversity, and real community activity.
We are working on setting up a moratorium with our local body but it was not endorsed in the last commissioners meeting. If you are a resident of Dixie County we ask you to please take the time and sign this petition which will be presented to the council. If you are not Dixie County resident at least share this post if you can to spread awareness, we need NO DATA CENTERS IN DIXIE!
