The Issue

We, the undersigned residents of Oxfordshire, call on the Oxfordshire County Council to stand against any move by central government to cut vital spending on roads and transport infrastructure.

We note with alarm the government's decision to raid funds allocated for roads and infrastructure to pay for military spending. This has already resulted in cuts to the funding of road-improvement projects across the country, such as the A34 Newark bypass-widening scheme. We also note the comments by the new defence secretary in recent days, that defence spending will be prioritised over other government spending.

The people of Oxfordshire deserve more from our government on transport, not less. This past year, we have lived with a pothole crisis. The Botley Road has been closed for three years, and now its re-opening has been delayed even further. Oxfordshire must not be forced any longer to put up with crumbling roads and cancelled or delayed projects, so that central government can spend even more on weapons for foreign wars.

We therefore call upon Oxfordshire County Council to urgently seek guarantees from the government that there will be no cuts affecting transport spending in our county.

Should the government pursue any such cuts, we call on Oxfordshire County Council to publicly announce and oppose them.
