No Credit, Just Coverage

No Credit, Just Coverage
The Issue
I am far from alone in observing that the current system of determining auto insurance rates in Alabama leaves much to be desired. Despite being a safe driver for over eight years without a single crash or ticket, I find my premiums continuously on the rise. The culprit? Credit-based insurance scoring that punishes those like me who wish to drive responsibly. This system allows factors that have no bearing on driving to inflate insurance costs. This fight is about fairness for every responsible driver who should be charged based on risk, not unrelated financial factors.
It's not just me - millions of drivers nationwide are affected by this policy. A Consumer Reports study showed that credit scores could cause car insurance rates to vary by hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars, regardless of one's driving record. Unlike accidents or traffic violations, managing credit isn't a direct measure of driving proficiency or risk. Therefore, using credit-based insurance scoring blatantly betrays the concept of risk-based rates.
In our Alabama community, many people are forced to pay significantly more for their insurance due to factors that should be irrelevant. In fact, a report by the Federal Trade Commission found that credit-based insurance scores are likely to result in African Americans and Hispanics paying more for auto insurance premiums. We believe these practices to be unjust.
Just as the insurance industry recommends safe driving practices to lower risk and premiums, let's recommend that they utilize a more equitable approach in evaluating premiums – one that directly reflects an individual's risk as a driver, not their financial status.
It's time to stand up and demand change. Let's ensure the fairness of insurance premiums for Alabamians and all drivers. We ask the insurance industry, state, and federal officials to restrict the use of credit-based insurance scoring.
