No Backdoor Gun Rights for Felon Political Allies

No Backdoor Gun Rights for Felon Political Allies
The Issue
The Department of Justice has quietly restored federal gun rights to 22 individuals, including Arizona State Sen. Jake Hoffman, who was indicted in 2024 in connection with the fake elector case and later pardoned by President Trump.
Most of the individuals on the list had decades-old nonviolent felony convictions. But the inclusion of an indicted political figure and the lack of public explanation for how decisions were made have raised serious concerns about transparency and fairness.
Congress effectively halted ATF’s gun rights restoration review in 1992 through a funding restriction after evidence showed violent offenders were regaining access to firearms. The current DOJ revived the program last year, arguing that the authority rests with the Attorney General.
Whether one supports or opposes gun rights restoration in principle, Americans deserve clear standards and public accountability when constitutional rights are reinstated.
The DOJ has not published detailed criteria for how names are selected, how public safety is assessed, or why certain individuals including those facing ongoing state felony charges qualify for relief.
We call on Attorney General Pam Bondi to publicly release the full vetting criteria, risk assessment standards, and decision-making process used in restoring gun rights.
We further urge the House Oversight Committee and Senate Judiciary Committee to review whether the revived program complies with congressional intent and public safety safeguards.
Gun policy must be transparent, consistent, and free from political favoritism.
