The Issue

Bring a Safe Haven Baby Program to Nova Scotia.

Like many Nova Scotians, I have spent the last few days thinking about the heartbreaking tragedy in Halifax involving a young mother and her newborn baby.

As details continue to emerge, one thing keeps coming to mind: what if there had been another option?

This petition is not intended to comment on, speculate about, or assign blame regarding any ongoing investigation. My heart goes out to everyone affected. Instead, this petition is about asking an important question: could Nova Scotia do more to provide safe options for parents in crisis and better protect vulnerable newborns?

Many places have Safe Haven programs that allow a newborn to be safely surrendered without fear or judgment. Some locations also use Safe Haven Baby Boxes which is a secure, temperature-controlled compartment installed at places like hospitals or fire stations. They allow a parent in crisis to safely and anonymously place a newborn inside, once the door closes a silent alarm goes off to ensure the baby is immediately retrieved and given medical attention by the designated careteam.

Nova Scotia currently does not have a program like this. No system is perfect, and no one can say whether a Safe Haven option would have changed the outcome in any particular situation. But if even one life could be saved in the future, I believe it’s a conversation worth having.

I am calling on the Province of Nova Scotia, healthcare leaders, child welfare agencies, and community partners to:

  • Explore Safe Haven legislation for newborn surrender.
  • Consult healthcare professionals, emergency responders, and child welfare experts.
  •  Consider designated Safe Haven surrender locations, including the possibility of Safe Haven Baby Boxes at approved facilities such as hospitals or emergency services buildings.
  •  Increase public awareness of supports available to parents experiencing crisis pregnancies or postpartum challenges.

This isn’t about judgment. It’s about compassion.

It’s about making sure that when someone feels completely overwhelmed and out of options, there is one more safe door they can open.

If you believe Nova Scotia should explore Safe Haven programs, please sign and share.

Let’s have this conversation now, before another family faces a crisis alone.
