No "Afghan bazaar" No "little Bamyan" KABUL BAZAAR" REPRESENT ALL AFGHANISTAN ETHNICITIES
The issue
Dandenong is home to a rich mosaic of cultures, with people from diverse backgrounds, including Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks, and many others. Among them, the Tajiks—descendants of the ancient Persian-speaking peoples of Central Asia—have played a significant role in shaping history. With roots in the civilizations of Bactria and Sogdiana, Tajiks have contributed to literature, trade, and governance for centuries. However, they have often been misrepresented or falsely portrayed, both in official and unofficial gatherings, particularly by Pashtun narratives that have historically dominated discourse.
Currently, the retail market thrives as a hub for food, spices, garments, and cultural goods. However, it lacks an inclusive name that truly reflects the ethnic diversity of those it represents. A research study by Deakin University (2018) highlighted the invaluable contributions of these groups to Dandenong’s social, economic, and cultural fabric. Recognizing this diversity through a more inclusive market name would foster greater cultural awareness, unity, and respect among all.
We urge local authorities to adopt a market name that honors this shared heritage, ensuring that every group feels acknowledged and valued. By signing this petition, you support inclusivity, cultural recognition, and a stronger, united community.
Endorse this change today and help make Dandenong’s market a true reflection of its diverse heritage!
