Approve & develop the promised Regional Sports Center (RSC) in Ghansoli, Navi Mumbai
The Issue
Ghansoli node in Navi Mumbai has experienced a surge in the penetration of real-estate giants along the new Palm Beach Road, thus increasing the demand for quality premium facilities.
Back in 2011, there was a mention to develop a Multi-Facility Sports Stadium with an Olympic-sized swimming center in the NMMC budget. The same promises have been repeated over the years and the project has yet not seen the light of any concrete planning, tenders, and groundwork. There has been a longstanding dormancy in the project, without any disclosure on the status whatsoever. Considering that the aforementioned development is a public project, there must be no hindrance in the development!
According to the revised Developmental Plan for Ghansoli by NMMC, the area for the sports complex has been clearly demarcated however much to our chagrin the project is being used as a landfill, which dwindles our hope for the promised.
Today, citizens of the Ghansoli node do not have any quick access to quality sporting facilities, with the nearest sports center being in Airoli, and then in Vashi. This project shall not only benefit the citizens of Ghansoli but shall also provide amenities to the citizens of adjacent localities.
Here is a brief summary of the timeline of developments in the case:
2016: Revision in the proposal for an International standard Sports Center. CIDCO floated, tender for 4 plots, in sector 12 excluding the plot reserved for GOM Sports Complex. On 1st Sept 2016, the bids for the tender were opened. On the same day, the land reserved for the GOM sports complex was de-reserved. Here,
2017: Tenders worth 300+ crores floated in April and June. There has been no concrete information about the outcome.
2018: The area surrounding is converted into an incinerator of garbage, adding to the public worries. 10000 sq meters from the land reserved for the RSC has now been sold to a private entity by CIDCO, sparking activism against high-rises in an environmentally fragile area. However, this violates 2 key norms:
1. Marking of plot open for tendering can't be changed.
2. The land was reserved by the Government of Maharashtra as per the Maharashtra State Sports Policy and therefore it cannot be modified.
The civic body needs to realize its responsibilities towards public welfare. A ten-year delay in construction is unacceptable and clearly hints towards the inefficiency of the civic body in fulfillment of promised actions. The common public is kept under false hopes for the development of the node.
An action towards speedy development is much anticipated by the civic body immediately. Furthermore, we demand transparency from NMMC regarding the project, its development plan & timeline.
To mention further, several developmental projects in Navi Mumbai have been lying dormant, namely, Navi Mumbai International Airport, Navi Mumbai Metro, Koparkharine Vikroli Link Road & much anticipated public opening of the Ghansoli Central Park.
