I wanted to provide an alternative to graduation rather than having another virtual one for the spring 2021 NIU graduates. The proposal would be that rather than having graduation inside the convocation center (Holds 10,000 people), why doesn't NIU hold it outside in the football stadium (Holds 24,000 people). This would make it so that there is more space for people to socially distance in a safer environment. Masks would be part of the requirement. This also means that people might not want to attend because of their personal safety, which is fine. An effective plan could be to have a registration for the people that do want to attend, and have a maximum of 2 guests per student. NIU would also hold this graduation according to different majors and different times, or even days. NIU is currently looking at a variety of different options to celebrate in-person, and I believe that this is one of the safest alternatives. I understand that graduation is important to many students that have worked hard to achieve this goal. Feel free to sign this petition to possibly execute an in-person graduation.
