Repair National Highway 80-Bhagalpur to Mirzachowki. Start work on new four lane NH-80.

The Issue

APPEAL TO PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA SHRI NARENDRA MODI JI AND SHRI NITIN GADKARI JI, MINISTER OF ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS,GOVT. OF INDIA ON NATIONAL HIGHWAY 80

1) Please get the current NH 80 between Bhagalpur to Mirzachowki repaired. This has not been done for last 10 years.

2) Please get work started on the four lane NH-80 from Munger to Mirzachowki section as announced by the Prime minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji as part of the Bihar package in 2015. The local press reported that the DPR has already been submitted to NHAI with alternate alignment and land acquisition needs to start from Munger.

3) Please ensure that this time for both the repair of the road and construction of the new four lane the project is awarded to a renowned Indian/Global company like L&T or any other company known for quality. In the past shady companies have just siphoned off all the money without repairing.

4)Technology consultation with a renowned road construction institute for proper soil testing and adopting latest technology so that once the road is built it lasts for few years. Since this road is expected to bear very heavy load of all the trucks carrying building material like stone chips and building material form Kahalgaon and neighboring area to all across the country; Road need to be built with extra care and best technology.

Prime minister Modi Ji and Surface transport minister Gadkari Ji , please instruct the NHAI to expedite both the repair of current NH80 and work started on the Four laning.. This road is a very important road of National and international importance as also a lifeline to hundreds of villages around this area.

The pathetic state of National Highway 80 between Munger to Mirzachowki.

National Highway No 80 Between Bhagalpur and Mirzachowki is perhaps the worst National Highway in India where no repair work has been undertaken in last 10 years. There are vast stretches where the National Highway-80 has totally disappeared and has huge craters. During the rainy season these craters are converted into mini swimming pools. No repair of this section of the road has been undertaken in last 10 years. The current road is in worse condition than a heavily bombarded road in a war zone

Every year hundreds of accidents and actually every day one or more serious accidents take place on the current National Highway 80 where the poor citizens belonging mostly to the neighboring villages lose their lives. In fact the frequency of accidents on NH 80 is so high that the common people have turned indifferent to any of the accident news. It’s a sense of sheer hopelessness against the system.

Why National Highway 80 (NH-80) is a lifeline ?

National Highway 80 (NH-80) connects the historical Yoga Town of Munger in Bihar to Mirzachowki (an area that is possibly India’s biggest prehistoric fossils) via ancient University Location of VikramShila ( which at one point of time was more famous than Nalanda University )

The road passes through perhaps India’s most densely populated rural areas and also has important towns of Munger and Bhagalpur. Bhagalpur is Bihar’s second largest town after Patna.

The road is a lifeline for thousands of villages and towns around Munger, Bhagalpur Kahalgaon and Mirzachowki. People depend on this road for Medical Emergencies to go to towns of Bhagalpur and Patna. But in the current stage of this road it is impossible for anyone from a Village near Kahalgaon to reach Bhagalpur by road. The main sufferers are the poor villagers who could benefit a lot for Medical , Education and Employment.

Why is current NH 80 a blot on India’s international image?

Increasing number of foreigners are coming to Munger for learning Yoga and as a natural visit they Visit the Vikramshila University site and most of them are horrified by the current state of NH-80. And God forbid if they proceed towards Mirzachowki for visiting the fossils. On vast stretches the Road has Vanished and there is no road at all.

Why NH 80 is of National as well as International importance?

There are hundreds of ancient places of worship for all religions including Jainism, Hinduism and Buddhism near this highway. This is perhaps India’s “holiest National Highway” in terms of large number of spiritual and other natural places of National and International importance along the highway. These include

1) Bihar School of Yoga, Munger. World famous Institution focused on Yoga attracts thousands of students across the world.

2) Sultangunj: The starting point of famous annual Shravan mela where millions of Hindus across the world pick water of river Ganges and walk up to Devghar Badyanath Dham to worship lord Shiva.During a calender year approx. 2 crore devotees pick water.

3)  Shri Champapur Jain Digambar Temple: The main temple is 2500 years old and thousands of Jain devotees across the world visit the temple every year

4)  The Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary stretching from Sultangunj to Kahalgaon. This was set up to protect our National aquatic animal Gangetic dolphin. NH 80 runs parallel to river Ganga. In what could have been an environmental tourism and researcher paradise is currently a non-motor able road

5)Bhagalpur: The ruins of famous Vikramshila University a Contemporary of the Nalanda University. The remains are around 1500 yrs old

6) Sahibgunj in Jharkhand: This is famous for Rajmahal hills fossils and the proposed Fossil Research Institute

7)Kahalgaon: The recently announced Central University of Vikramshila will perhaps be located somewhere near the near proposed four lane highway as well.

8)New proposed central university of Vikramshila near Bhagalpur.

9)Bateshwar Mahadev: A site of ancient pre-historic Shiva temple and many more…..

Thanks to PM Modi Ji and Gadkari Ji

And finally the citizens of this area thank both Shri Nitin Gadkari Ji and Shri Narendra Modi Ji for starting work on the Bhagalpur Bypass road that will help in saving hundreds of children getting crushed under the trucks. Work on this project is commendable. Both NHAI and the contractor are doing great job on this project. We hope that same dedication and commitment will be shown to 1) Repair the current NH 80 and 2)Start work on new four lane NH 80 from Munger to Mirzachowki

UPDATE on 26 August 2016: NHAI sent an email and clarified its position that: 1) Repair of old NH 80 is responsibility of Road transport Department, Govt of Bihar 2) The new 4 lane is responsibility of NHAI.

Actions awaited from both parties.
