Greetings!

This petition aims to increase the number of pet cemeteries in Metro Manila. Here in the Philippines we consider our pets as a part of the family. Pets are known to be man’s best friend, however their life span is much shorter compared to us humans. Like people, animals also contribute to a big role in our environment, hence they also deserve a dignified burial. A lot of people consider burying their pets in their backyard, lawn, or anywhere near their property as a sign of remembrance. But, burying a pet somewhere in the open close to human interaction is a lot dangerous than people think.

The number of pet owners here in the Philippines increases every year. According to the 2019 statistics, nine (9) million households all over the country has at least one (1) dog. We are unaware that just by burying a dog near human interaction can actually cause some diseases. 200 to 300 Filipinos die per year due to diseases brought by pets. In 2010, 257 died of rabies, in 2011, 202 deaths were reported. For the past 5 years, almost half of rabies exposures are among school children. In Metro Manila, there are only seven (7) places/shops where pet owners can dispose their pets.

Sources:

What are the consequences if the pet owners continue to bury their pets in their backyard:

  • If pets are buried without proper disposal, the pet's body will decompose beneath the soil as it attracts parasites. These parasites causes the soil to lose it's nourishment.
  • The dead remains of the pet can still contaminate diseases such as rabies and parasitic worms can enter a human's body.
  • If another animal scavenges around the area of where the pet was buried, there is a possibility that they will be poisoned by euthanasia solution from the dead remains of the buried pet.
  • If the pet was decided to be cremated, The process of cremation is more harmful for the environment as it releases greenhouse gases in which causes air pollution

This petition focuses on the philosophical views on environmental justice and environmental aesthetics. It focuses on environmental justice as this petition aims to increase the number of pet cemeteries in Metro Manila. Environmental justice can be applied because if the pet owner’s responsibility to handle the dead body of a pet goes wrong, the whole community may suffer from diseases and parasitic soils. It can be based on this philosophical view because the implementation of this petition is for the community and in return the citizens have a fair distribution of benefits. This petition also focuses on environmental aesthetics. Simply because it causes parasitic soil whereas it takes up all the nourishment of soil. Resulting to man appreciating land areas less due to parasites.

(merits) If this petition is granted then:

  •  Land areas near human interaction are more sanitary.
  • Parasitic diseases will lessen, resulting to a healthy environment.
  • It will decrease the death rates caused by rabies, diseases etc.
  • Rights of animals will no longer be degraded as they are given a proper burial.
  • It will not contribute to land pollution nor air pollution.

How can this problem be solved? The government must add more  pet cemeteries. This is because pet cemeteries are gated and more sanitary as they dispose pets in a safer manner. It is not recommended for pets to be cremated as well due to it's negative effects towards our environment. The most environmental friendly solution to dispose pets/animals is through a proper burial at a pet cemetery. As an individual, never bury or dispose a pet in your backyard as not only you are in harm but as well as the people surrounding you.

If one really wants to give recognition to it's pet, you must give it a proper and dignified burial at death. Not only will this burial be proper and dignified for your pet but also for the environment and people as well. It will be a big contribution to the environment as it lessens land and air pollution. It also lessens the risk of people to be infected by parasites. In other words, one small, simple and thoughtful act (petition) can change our environment in a grand scheme of things. Join us as we take a step by acknowledging this petition.

Thank you!
