HELP STOP DISCRIMINATION AGAINST GIRLS IN DRESSCODE!!!
The Issue
Us teens are not protesting against the dress code to walk around with our buttox being seen from underneath our shorts, nor to come to school in a sports bra or spandex. We are protesting for having to be sent home over a hole above our knee, and for having our education being disrupted because we are seen as a "distraction" to others around us, as if we are not human. We are protesting because we are tired and exhausted for being sexualized as minors, and seen as objects. It is not our responsibility to cover up, because someone else can not control themselves. Telling girls to "cover up" just as puberty hits teaches them that their bodies are inappropriate, dangerous, violable, subject to constant scrutiny and judgment, including by the adults they trust. Nor does it help them understand the culture's role in their wardrobe choices. Our shoulders and midriffs are NOT a distraction. It is 100 degrees outside, and most of our schools are outdoor. The standard dress code targets women and mainly women. The misogyny and sexism rooted in our dress code is excessive and uncomfortable. Pulling children away from their class & time with their peers just because teachers find their clothing "distractive" is outrageous. It is about time students speak their minds, and voice their opinions. By signing this petition you are helping state that you do not find shoulders, midriffs, holes above the knee, shorts shorter than 4 inches above the knee, shirts that reveal back, and low cut shirts, as a distraction. Truly none of the students have any problem with what anyone else wears. The only people distracted by our clothing are the teachers, and if they are distracted by what we minors wear, they should not be working with children. We appreciate everyones help & participation in helping make our voices heard.
