Nintendo needs to stop promoting racial stereotypes!
The Issue
Modern Society has helped to prevent offending most races and cultures; however, there are still many stereotypes and unfair assumptions of European races. Italians are victims of Nintendo's stereotypical mascot: Mario.
Mario is an Italian plumber with a stereotypical accent, personality and interests. He often says catchphrases such as "Mamma Mia!" and broken English phrases including but not limited to: "It's a me, Mario", "Let's a go", and "Let's a play." Mario has also "dreamed" of certain pastas, such as lasagna, spaghetti, and macaroni. Is this really what we want to teach our children to think of Italians? Nintendo assumes all Italians have the same accent, catchphrases, and interests; however, not all Italians are the same.
One of the key issues is Mario's voice. His voice actor is actually not Italian; Mario's voice actor is only impersonating and Italian accent. He is taking advantage of Italians' accents for monetary gain. This is downright racist because it seems like the voice actor is mocking Italians because of their "funny" accent.
Nintendo needs to stop promoting this general assumption of Italians. With your help, we can encourage Nintendo to eliminate this offensive mascot and all characters affiliated with it. We want to make Italians feel welcomed, not bullied. One day, all races will be treated with love and respect; however, until that day, we must do everything we can to support the cause.
