Due to the current mechanics in the game, once you start an island you cannot change your name. For most, more specifically cisgender individuals, this isn't a problem and they can play on without any discomfort. But for the transgender community, this can be painful if have their island resident with their deadname. The only way to fix this currently is to start over entirely and put in a new name, which is awful for people who have spent so much dedicated time working on their island. The easy solution would be to give us the option to simply change our names in game so we don't have to erase all our hard work. I, a nonbinary individual, have restarted my own island three times just to find a preferred name that works for me. The best way to make this happen in the game would be to either talk to Isabelle or even have it as a Nook Miles option. There's gender neutral terminology already introduced to the game when referring to the Resident Representative and other villagers, so I don't see why there couldn't be an option for transgender gamers to express themselves through their names. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has become a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community to express themselves how they see themselves. I only wish that Nintendo would take this step to aid their transgender fans.
