Ban on indiscriminate sales of eye medications by Artisans in Public domain in Nigeria

The Issue

Recently there has been a preponderance of patients being treated in different eye clinics nationwide for the adverse effect of herbal/unapproved eye drugs which has resulted in blindness or severe visual impairment.

These drugs are being hawked in public places especially among the illiterates in the society as a better option to the right medications and on Social media as a panacea to every eye problem.

As a Nigerian Optometrist, it is my Civic responsibility to cater for the vision status of the average Nigerian citizen and reduce the avoidable causes of blindness.

This petition is aimed at making the Nigerian government to place a ban on Hawking of eye and eye related medications and put strigent regulations in place to prevent sales of illicit eye products in public domain

If this is achieved, we would succeed in protecting the Public from avoidable vision loss and elevating the standard of eye care in Nigeria. This in part contributes to the WHO | SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages.
