Why this petition matters

Started by Kosi Obiakor

Can you imagine not being able to use your cellphone or even have a tattoo on your own body because of the fear of being arrested or killed? Well, that's what is happening in Nigeria. I made this petition to end police brutality in Nigeria but specifically to end a group called SARS(the special Anti-robbery squad) which was meant to protect citizens from armed robbery, but they have been abusing their power.

This group targets people(younger people mostly) that dress nicely, have tattoos, dreadlocks, iPhones, nice cars, and other luxury items they stop these people on the road and force them to give them money, and if they don't they threaten to kill them. There has been 82 reported cases of SARS abuses including beatings, hangings, mock executions, sexual assault, and waterboarding.

The youth of Nigeria has gone to the streets to protest SARS and has made the hashtag end SARS on social media they have been getting a lot of media attention and major celebrates and corporations have publicly supported them. But a few days ago at a protest in Lekki, the lights and CCTV were turned off and the protestors were shot at with real bullets, 10 people died and hundreds were wounded. President Muhammadu Buhari told people to stop protesting and that their voices have been heard but leaders have promised police reform four times in the last four years.

   # end SARS is a social movement that demands Nigeria's government to end the deployment of this squad. Just because it may not be happening where you live doesn't mean it should be ignored. We need to speak out, we need to educate yourselves. END SARS!
