The Issue

To Whom It May Concern,

We, the undersigned members of the Labor & Delivery team, respectfully request the relocation of the NICU trauma blood refrigerator currently housed within our unit’s charting area on B-pod.

While we understand the importance of ensuring rapid access to critical resources, the current placement of this refrigerator has created significant and ongoing challenges for our department:

- Excessive Noise: The refrigerator produces constant loud noise that disrupts concentration, communication, and workflow in a space primarily designated for charting and clinical coordination.
- Loss of Valuable Workspace: Labor & Delivery space is already limited, and the NICU blood refrigerator occupies substantial space in an area that was previously used as storage for our patients’ breast milk, which was much needed.
- Lack of Direct Utility for Labor & Delivery Staff: This equipment is designated for NICU trauma use and is not routinely utilized by our team, yet its presence disproportionately impacts our daily work environment.
- Increased Risk for Medication/Blood Administration Errors: Housing specialized NICU blood products in a high-traffic adult care area creates unnecessary potential for confusion and serious administration mistakes.
- Impact on Staff Productivity and Well-Being: The disruption contributes to frustration, decreased focus, and reduced workplace satisfaction.

We strongly believe that relocating this refrigerator to a more appropriate clinical area would not only improve workspace conditions for Labor & Delivery staff, but also significantly enhance patient safety by reducing the possibility of future critical errors.

We respectfully request that leadership evaluate alternative locations that better align with both operational efficiency and safe clinical practice, ideally within or near the department that directly utilizes this equipment.

Our goal is to improve the functionality, safety, and effectiveness of the Labor & Delivery environment without compromising emergency preparedness.

We appreciate your prompt consideration of this serious concern and ask for timely action.

Sincerely,
The Labor & Delivery Team
