Do not abolish parent governors from schools governing bodies in England
The Issue
Democracy needs accountability. However this week it has been announced that the role of parent governors will be abolished from all school governing bodies in England and instead the Education Secretary Nicky Morgan MP said that a 'fully skills-based governance will become the norm'. Both are not mutually exclusive: according to a quote from Gillian Allcroft, of the National Governors' Association, in an article for The Guardian published on 17 March, “Parents of children and young people studying at a school bring an important perspective to the governance of schools that others are unlikely to bring.”. I am a working mother of a 7 year old boy in London and I believe that parent governors have a unique and indispensable role; if, independently of your political views, you agree parents can contribute to make a difference to their children's education and children in years to come; if you agree that parent governors help governing bodies to understand parents’ views and to remind them how matters discussed affect families - who are key stakeholders in the education process - and if you agree that bringing in skills-based governance should be implemented without excluding the parents' voice, show your support now as 100 thousand signatures are required for this to be discussed in Parliament. Let's have a say on how our schools are run.
