MIGRAINE is so misunderstood. I suffer almost daily to some degree from this awful, debilitating condition and have run out of preventative medication to try. My last hope was Aimovig and just as I was due to start it, it was snatched away from me when NICE for the second time refused it. There are many others in a similar position to me.

The NHS was just prevented from using a groundbreaking new type of migraine drug that is ‘life changing' for sufferers. And if you think migraine is like a bad headache so the denial of medicine is no big deal know these facts - The World Health Organisation categorises chronic migraine as the same level of disability as dementia, quadriplegia and acute psychosis and as more disabling than blindness, paraplegia angina or rheumatoid arthritis.

Migraines cost the UK £2.25 billion every year through lost work days not to mention the £150 million costs of less effective medications.

Having chronic migraine (meaning 15+ days per month) is like a living death, where all your senses are on fire and in total confusion. Often power of speech is lost, and vision loss or disturbance, vomiting and vertigo combine with pain to rival childbirth or kidney stones. No light, no sound, no activities, not even thoughts, are possible.

Our Neurologists understand this and are devastated and have lodged appeals to change the decision and get us our medicine.

The new drug, Aimovig, is the first in a whole new class of drugs called CGRP injections and 40-60% of sufferers saw migraine days cut in half. The injections cost £386.50 month, meaning using them on the NHS would actually boost the UK economy by about £900 million.

In September 2019  Aimovig was turned down for use on the NHS by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) even though they recognised it would be life-changing for sufferers. They said it was not cost-effective

Migraine doesn’t usually kill, and it isn’t visible like quadriplegia – but it took away my life, and that of thousands of others. We now have the medicine that can get us better and get our lives back. Please sign this petition and share widely so people realise we are being held hostage and tortured by a debilitating and ravaging illness – and NICE is throwing away the key.
