Cut the new prison rule (psi 30/2013) that is trying to force innocent prisoners into confessing to a false guilt by placing them on a 'basic' IEP regime!!
The Issue
As of the 1st February 2014 there is a new rule that prisoners that maintain their innocence are to be placed on 'basic regime' which includes loss of privilges i.e, less money allowed to spend ( which means they will not be able to keep regular contact with their partners/family, less visits allowed per month and to have there televisions removed from their cells. Whilst I appreciate that there obviously are a lot of 'guilty' convicts who will always maintain there innocence, what about the actual innocent ones (of which there are thousands of-FACT) currently in the prison system, found guilty of a crime they have not committed!
I feel so passionately about this as my partner is one of these convicts and is currently awaiting an appeal on his conviction as he was wrongly found guilty by the jury at his trial. I am not just creating this petition for my partner but for ALL innocents who are facing injustice and now inhumane conditions.
If you can imagine being convicted of a crime you have not committed (which is psychologically damaging as it is) to then be punished further by not being allowed a television (and as many of these prisoners can't read very well) what can they do but sit there every night thinking.....and nothing to take their minds off there tragic situation?? Plus only being allowed a low amount of 'spends' per week means less credit for the telephone so communication between family members and solicitors will be extremely limited, I fear suicide rates are going to significantly increase. At the very least I think this new law should be reviewed for prisoners that are awaiting an appeal.
