Licence enzalutamide for all prostate cancer sufferers not just those in Scotland
Licence enzalutamide for all prostate cancer sufferers not just those in Scotland
The Issue
Every year approximately 40,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK. 1 man in every 8 will most likely have prostate cancer at some point in their life. Advances are being made in treatment all the time and the aim is to make prostate cancer a manageable, chronic, long-term condition rather than a terminal illness. At the moment men who live in Scotland have a wider choice of therapies available to them but in England NICE have changed their minds and now thousands of men will be denied a new drug called enzalutamide.Ths drug has been shown to prolong survival and to improve quality of life in men who have advanced prostate cancer, i.e. cancer which has spread to other parts of the body. In England if a patient has previously been prescribed a treatment called abiraterone they are not allowed to have enzalutamide yet in Scotland these rules do not apply. Doctors in Scotland can prescribe enzalutamide regardless and many prostate cancer sufferers there are leading fulfilling, active lives. This is grossly unfair and is clearly based on financial criteria rather than considering the benefits to cancer sufferers. Please take a moment to sign my petition so we can let NICE know that we are not prepared to accept this decision. Please be the voice of prostate cancer sufferers in England as at some point in the future prostate cancer may well affect either yourself or a loved one.
