Give part of Wentworth Park Greyhound Track to Sydney Dogs and Cats Re-Home Shelter

Give part of Wentworth Park Greyhound Track to Sydney Dogs and Cats Re-Home Shelter

The issue

After years of systemic abuse and mass slaughter, the greyhound industry in NSW is being shut down. Unfortunately, the overcrowded and underfunded animal welfare sector in Sydney is at crisis point. These are the people who will be instrumental in re-homing the displaced greyhounds.

  • The RSPCA Yagoona facility is overcrowded with stray animals at 108% capacity (1)
  • Critically, the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home will likely be evicted from their leased land in the coming weeks (it's home in Carlton is slated for apartments)
  • The Renbury Farm Animal Shelter in Sydney's south-west has been identified as a site to be redeveloped

Sydney Dogs and Cats Home are one of the only facilities in NSW that do not place a time limit on animals in their care. They have been trying to get a parcel of land to build new facilities from the NSW Government for a year. They have already raised almost $1 million towards the cost of building these new facilities, but the Government has not given them any land yet.

Giving them part of the Wentworth Park greyhound track would be perfect.

They also run a range of community projects for the elderly, those with disabilities, and those with mental illness.

Not only do the former racing greyhounds need rehoming, but the strays and lost animals currently serviced by these centres also need help. We ask that the Mike Baird, Niall Blair (the Minister for Primary Industries and Minister for Lands and Water), and the NSW Government step up to the plate and ensure these centres can continue their vital work, first and foremost by finally giving Sydney Dogs and Cats Home a parcel of land to relocate to.

As an animal lover, I'd be devastated if services already stretched to breaking point are not supported at a time when their services are about to be placed in even greater, unprecedented demand. There is no excuse not to give Sydney Dogs and Cats Home new land - it's been a crisis a year in the making.

Please sign and share.
