NHS Fund a unit in Cornwall where postnatal mothers can be given treatment
The Issue
In Cornwall, there currently isn’t a mother and baby unit to support postnatal mothers with mental health and supporting them to stay with their baby. Allowing both the baby and the mother to bond while the mother gets the treatment needed. Without a dreadful outcome of death, in many a mother’s situation or that of the infant.
At the moment mothers are expected to enter a psychiatric ward alone, with patients of all mental illnesses and this can be incredibly scary and add extra trauma to the individual. Not having their infant there can heighten the symptoms of postpartum depression and psychosis. If a mother and baby unit is purposely built this would save so many mothers and their infants and allow them to have a better experience which in turn keeps the bond between mother and baby. They will then go on to have a better future and health.
