Ban the use of the Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator in the NHS

The Issue

The BMI calculator is a healthy weight calculator. It measures the correlation between height and weight to allocate a number between 0 and 100. Each number falls within a range which determines a person's level of obesity.

The BMI calculator was invented by a non-medical mathmetition in 1830, to be used as a quick method of measuring weight distribution to aid a government survey for funding. It was never meant to be used to measure a person's health. Yet 200 years on, that's how it is being used.

My personal reason for starting this petition is that my medical condition went undiagnosed for years as my high BMI had been listed as the reason for my symptoms. However, I am not actually obese, my BMI will always be high because I am short. According to my BMI, I am so obese that I'm not even on the chart, yet I have a 38 inch waist and wear size 16 clothes. On top of this, it is difficult to get a low cost life insurance policy due to my BMI, even though I am slightly overweight, but otherwise perfectly healthy.

A more accurate measurement of weight related health would be to consider a person's lifestyle, relationship with food and exercise, waist, leg and arm measurements, without their height coming into the equation. I believe this method would be fast, effective and personal to each patient, while still ensuring that obesity, unhealthy low weight and eating disorders don't go unchecked.
