NFL: Please use your resources to make football cruelty-free.

I recently read a Sports Illustrated article on how footballs are made. Before the article starts, there is a disclaimer saying that there are descriptions from inside an animal slaughterhouse and it may be disturbing to some readers. The creation of a football should not need a disclaimer warning people that it may be disturbing, however, the disclaimer was valid. The words were horrific and heart-wrenching. In that moment, a football became a symbol of sadness and terror.

I've always considered the game of football to be a family friendly sport. A sport that often brings people together and encourages camaraderie. People simply connect because they both cheer for the same team. Football games become times of celebration and bring people together whether at a party or out with friends. It's amazing how the team people follow often becomes part of their identity. Sport's have the potential to have such a positive impact.

People admire the NFL and follow their lead. The NFL is sponsored by a certain company, people will follow. The NFL is selling merchandise, people will buy it. The NFL has the ability to do so much good and create incredible change because so many people value the NFL.

I am hoping that the NFL, one of the wealthiest organizations, will consider using resources to explore cruelty free options for equipment, such as footballs. No animal needs to die. The NFL has the power to create change. With the NFL's reputation and resources, there should be no reason why they cannot look into, or even create, synthetic alternatives.

The SI article states that 25,000 footballs are made each year and that one cow hide produces 10-12 footballs. Thats over 2,000 cows that are dying when there are cruelty-free options available. If you've never met a cow, I encourage you to do so. Research a sanctuary near you and make the trip for a tour, or volunteer for a real personal experience. Cows each have individual, and special personalities. They form close bonds and look out for one another. Some are shy, some are friendly, some are assertive, some like to hang back and observe but they are all unique. I speak about cows from experience. I visit/ volunteer at many sanctuaries. I have met so many cows and each cow has left a special mark on my heart. One thing I admire most about cows is how resilient they are. Most of the cows I've met are rescues. Up until their rescue, they hadn't had a positive experience with a human. They suffered at the hands of humans, yet so many of them are welcoming of my outreached hand. If you have the chance to meet a cow, you will understand they are so much more than a football.

As a person who values human and animal life, I am hoping that people will see the value in searching for animal friendly alternatives. I encourage you to search for the article and read for yourself the terror that is involved in each football. Cows feel love, pain, fear, happiness, and other emotions. They are no different than your dog or cat in the ways that matter. If you can't imagine sending your companion animal off to become a piece of sports equipment, then I encourage you to please sign this petition and please show the NFL that we want cruelty-free equipment.

Thank you for your support!
