Preserve the Bird-In-Hand at 111 S. State Street, Newtown, Bucks County, PA

Preserve the Bird-In-Hand at 111 S. State Street, Newtown, Bucks County, PA

The Issue

The current owners of the Bird-in-Hand are seeking approval to subdivide this property based on the maximum footprint allowed to be developed. This could be for a new home or business, in the existing back yard, which would have additional impact on the property if sold for that intent. This subdivision would require the demolition of the garage and outbuilding.

This property has historic significance for Newtown and the house has stood at this corner for over 330 years. This is the only site of Revolutionary War action to take place in Newtown, resulting in more losses than the battle of Trenton. This site is the last remaining intact lot of the original "six squares" of property that comprised the original layout of Newtown.

We believe that this property should remain in its present configuration, preserving the integrity of the Historic District, now and for future generations. We the undersigned, urge Newtown Borough Council to take all legal measures to ensure that this outcome is attained.
