Due to COVID-19 restrictions, students are currently restricted from attending Newton South basketball games. While we understand the reasoning for these policies, as well as the risks that come with removing or changing them, our team believes it is imperative that students should be allowed to attend games and cheer us on. For over two years, we have taken precautions such as wearing masks, vaccinating, and social distancing to make school and athletic events as safe as possible. Some Newton South students have never been to a basketball game during their time at the school, while others are losing their final opportunities to attend a game as high schoolers. The atmosphere of a rivalry game against Westford Academy or a senior night is something that everyone deserves to experience. It’s something that we’re going to remember for the rest of our lives. For the players, it's an opportunity to do what we love in front of our close friends and family. For everyone else, high school basketball provides a unique form of community building that we especially need in these times. If fans were present, we fully believe our classmates would be responsible and considerate of any rules given to them by the school.
