Fight for Equal Enforcement of the NNPS Student Dress Code!

The Issue

The Student Dress Code. We all know what it is and we experience it every day when choosing our outfits. We ask ourselves: “Can I wear this to school? Is it appropriate? Will I get in trouble?” The harsh reality is that… students don’t know. Students are conflicted as their outfits may be acceptable under the Student Dress Code, yet the Dress Code has not been enforced the way it is written. Many Students (per the respondents of our poll) feel the Dress Code itself is exceptional, but the enforcement of such is biased.

Many enforcers (including but not limited to: Security officers, teachers, administrators, and other personnel) are biased when choosing students out of the crowds to Dress Code. Females with mainstream body types are less likely to be Dress Coded when compared to students who have non-mainstream body types (per the respondents in our poll).

From the polls we have run on our Instagram account (@theautumnproject.san), a plethora of both females and males have also stated that the Dress Code enforcement is more relaxed with males. This is shown in the overwhelming issue of “sagging”; many students (predominantly male) are seen “sagging” within the hallways and classrooms, despite it being a violation of the written Student Dress Code. However, females (per the respondents in our poll) have stated that they have been dress coded for having ripped jeans even though the rip may have been below the mid-thigh.

The results we have collected are what we expected. Students alike recognize the issues with the enforcement of the Dress Code almost unanimously. This isn’t new. Issues with the Dress Code have been presented to the school administration and/or the School Board, yet no effective solution has been proposed or acted upon for Woodside High School.

We are petitioning for equal enforcement of the Student Dress Code at Woodside High School and encourage other schools to reevaluate their own enforcement practices of the Student Dress Code. Half of the student body should not be allowed to get away with transgressing the Student Dress Code. Males and Females alike should be treated equally.
