Save Balaam leisure centre from being sold off to build flats
Why this petition matters
Balaam leisure centre is the oldest of the leisure centres that currently serve the London Borough of Newham. It is currently closed due to structural damage and the council have ear marked the land to be sold and turned into housing/flats in 2029.
Balaam serves the local community, all ages use the pool. School children have swimming lessons and PE lessons there. The elderly keep fit by swimming and undertaking exercise classes. With childhood obesity on the raise can we afford to take away resources that encourage health living and a healthy lifestyle. The daily creche time, allowed new mums the time to exercise whilst there children where in the creche.
Balaam leisure Centre is a community centre, which a family of all ages can use from kids go swimming, parents go to the gym or undertaking an exercise class or simply sit around and talk to other parents.
Newham council should not turn the space into housing. Newham council should rebuild the centre (like they did with Atherton Leisure Centre) from the top down and make it a multi purpose leisure centre fit from the 21st century, for another generation to enjoy. Please sign my petition to support balaam being rebuilt as a brand new state of the art leisure centre rather than turning the space into more flats.
