The planning applications for developments at Woolsington are continuing to cause public controversy.
The development that threatens Woolsington Woods is claimed to be necessary to finance the restoration of the Grade II listed Woolsington Hall.
Sir John Hall - who made multiple millions from Newcastle United Football Club - bought the property in 1994. The previous owners moved out in 1995 and the past 20 years have seen the wonderful family home fall into a sorry state of disrepair. In 2002, it was placed on English Heritage’s ‘Heritage at Risk Register’.
The full neglect of Woolsington Hall has now become apparent. Sir John Hall’s development company - Cameron Hall Developments Ltd - could have carried out repairs to the property at any time in the last two decades at a reasonable cost, but instead it has been left to fall into dereliction.
Now Cameron Hall Developments Ltd claims that the only way it can fund the refurbishment of the hall is through the destruction of Newcastle’s largest area of mature woodland to make way for 72 huge luxury homes. This would remove a vital habitat for many protected species. We cannot let this happen.
The planning committee will make a decision at 9.30 am on 17th July, at Newcastle Civic Centre.
