Better access to home adaptations for disabled people

The Issue

My 14yr old daughter is a wheelchair user and will be for the rest of her life, however, we are still on the waiting list for home adaptations after already waiting over 18months now. My daughter passed her "driving test" for a powered chair last month but, it cannot be supplied until the adaptations are done leaving her trapped in our dining room as her current chair cannot get through the doorways. She also hasn't had a bath/proper wash since end January 2019 as she has no access to any bathroom facilities.  We have now been advised that it will be approximately another 18 months- 2yrs before any adaptations are done to our home to allow her access to any washing facilities, other rooms in the home or the outside world.

My child will have no access to a bathroom - stripping her of her dignity, a kitchen - her basic right to feed herself, other rooms or the outside world -  her right of freedom and independence for up to 3 years. This is not acceptable.

We are petitioning Newcastle City Council as we have now exhausted all of the normal official routes available to us to ensure that the necessary arrangements and adaptations are completed as quickly as possible to ensure that my daughter and others in the same situation are able to have a decent quality of life in line with basic human rights and the current guidelines laid out by the Local Government Ombudsman and in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Every child has the right to dignity, respect, independence, freedom and family life, nobody should be trapped in one room for a sustained period of time...please sign the and share this to help us appeal to the council to complete the adaptations she desperately needs as quickly as possible
