New York State: Protect Tenants From No Cause Evictions and End Homelessness

New York State: Protect Tenants From No Cause Evictions and End Homelessness
The Issue
Housing is a human right. New York legislators must do everything in their power to make sure that everyone has a place to lay their head and a place to call home.
The Good Cause bill, first introduced in 2019, prevents tenants from being evicted without a good reason, and from being displaced due to unattainable and unreasonable rent increases or other scenarios in which the tenant is not at fault. It is about equity and fairness.
Assemblymembers Harry Bronson, Sarah Clark, and Demond Meeks are all sponsors of the bill in the Assembly, while Sen. Samra Brouk is a sponsor of the Senate bill.
The Good Cause bill has been a controversial piece of legislation, largely rallied for by tenant and housing rights organizations but opposed by New York Real Estate associations and landlords.
These groups argue that Good Cause will make it impossible to evict unruly tenants, trap landlords in indefinite leases, and lead to more difficulty in tenants finding stable housing.
The truth is that real estate agents and housing providers will simply have to be more diligent with scrutinizing applicants in order to avoid placing a tenant that disturbs the neighbors.
The bill simply codifies the grounds for which a person can be evicted. and can prevent unethical practices from landlords, like evicting for no other reason than greed and doubling the rent for newcomers.
Urge your legislators to protect our human rights and to avoid further homelessness in New York State. Write to your legislators today to end homelessness and protect tenants from no cause evictions and unaffordable rent increases.
I urge you to contact your local assembly members, Gov. Kathy Hochul, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Senator Chuck Schumer to save thousands of people from becoming homeless. Reach on out on their social media platforms and help spread the word!
