Billie Jo Muller started this petition to New York State Assembly and

It has been chatted about for years and years in the mining industry. Why does New York State not have a designated State Mineral? We do have a State "Gem", which is the Garnet. Beautiful. Amazing. But, does the Garnet change the economics of an entire State with its existence? The Herkimer Diamond does.

The "Herkimer Diamond", is a Quartz Crystal specimen, which comes from the earth in a unique manner, with great clarity and looking naturally faceted. The name “Herkimer Diamond” has been used for well over 100 years and is deeply ingrained in the language of local people as well as the rock and mineral community. It is told, that while crews were making roads in the County of Herkimer (State Route 28), they found the crystals in abundance, mimicking some clarity like a carbon diamond, hence the name "Herkimer Diamond".

What some of us have seen in our driveways for years, and what some of us have found in our back yards, has had direct impact on the economics of the State in multiple ways. People have moved to our state (specifically areas in Upstate, NY), simply because they want to be closer to the Herkimer Diamond Quartz Crystal. People have purchased houses & land, specifically for the Herkimer Diamonds that may or may not be in the earth. I've personally witnessed and have been part of these real estate transactions. People are spending money in our State because of the Herkimer Diamond. People are paying taxes in our State because of the Herkimer Diamond. People are renting hotels and Air BnB's in our State because of the Herkimer Diamond. People visit the Herkimer Diamond District from all over the world. They visit to check something off their bucket list. They visit to mine. They visit to collect and bring home. They visit to make new memories or remember the old.  They spend days, weeks, even months in our State, because of the Herkimer Diamond. People are spending money at convenience stores, gas stations, grocery stores and more, because of the Herkimer Diamond. Why is it so hard to recognize this, and designate it as the State Mineral?

I have personally pushed and pushed in every way that I can, but sometimes power is in numbers, and that's where I'm asking for a little help! Senator Seward has told me, "absent a commitment from the Assembly Democratic majority to pass the bill, I can not at this time see a path to its passage........" Although Senator Seward sponsored Legislation for more than a dozen years to designate the Herkimer Diamond as the State Mineral, and then the State Senate routinely passed the bill, it only died in the Assembly each and every year.  Former Assemblyman Butler was diligent in pushing for recognition, and he has since retired. Now what? I guess I present numbers.

Has the Herkimer Diamond impacted you in some way, shape or form? It could be something as big as moving closer to the Herkimer Diamond District, to something as little as visiting the area with your grandfather when you were younger. Maybe you've started a family tradition of mining for Herkimer Diamonds! Maybe you've been on vacation with your own family in our district, specifically to try your hand at mining. Maybe you have a Rock Shop across the country, and purchase Herkimer Diamonds from one of our local miners to sell in your own place. Maybe you make jewelry with Herkimer Diamonds. Maybe you just know the power of the Herkimer Diamond and want to show the love. Whatever the impact may be, I urge you to show your support in this and sign the petition, to bring forth to our local politicians  <3
