We need a change in the New York law for prosecuting drivers who take lives of pedestrians
The Issue
I lost my 25 year old Daughter, Aurilla Lawrence on 02/28/2019 . She was struck and killed by the driver of an oil tanker truck on Broadway and Rodney , in New York . Aurilla was a messenger for 6 years , and was a very skilled cyclist. The driver overtook Aurilla when he passed her and she ended up under the back wheels , and was run over . The driver fled the scene of the accident and did not stop after striking and killing her . There is video footage of Aurilla in front of the truck before being struck, so the driver was aware of her . I want a change in the laws to hold drivers accountable for taking people’s lives . I am being told by the NYC Police Dept. , that the driver is not facing charges. The district attorneys office is claiming that she “may have” hit a pot hole and lost control of her bike . This is victim blaming. I want justice for Aurilla. I feel the laws on accountability need to change so the drivers cannot just run down people and keep driving without repercussion . Drivers have learned that all they have to say is “I didn’t know “ and there will be no charges. There are far too many of these stories happening every day .
