Our school is full of girls who’ve been forced into uncomfortable situations, been harassed, disrespected, touched, victim blamed, and we’re tired of it. The admin needs to recognize that every person that signs this petition knows someone who has felt unsafe and/or uncomfortable in our school at some point. Some incidences may have been a one off, some situations are more serious, but the point is we shouldn’t have to deal with this at all. Not at school and not ever. There are several solutions, some even as basic as spreading more awareness in the school about respect and how you should treat others. Another option is maybe having monthly speakers that come in, to remind the boys of the effect their behaviour has. Another is for adults in the building to not disregard rude remarks towards girls if they ever hear that going on. Honestly, another aspect of this is keeping the youth liaison officers in the school as well. So that there is someone on campus who can discuss the consequences of someone’s actions immediately after someone reports it. The girls at NWSS want to be able to go to school and feel safe. Right now we step into the building and we are scared because too many of us have been taken advantage of and not said anything. Too many of us have had to put up with harassment and uncomfortable comments because we know most of the time if we try and speak up all the rest of the boys will just make the situation worse. We have a right to feel safe in our school environment, we deserve respect and we need the school to do something about it.
