New skatepark in Bournemouth: Bournemouth’s Own Southbank

New skatepark in Bournemouth: Bournemouth’s Own Southbank
The Issue
Reasons for a new skatepark in Bournemouth:
- Shops and town rangers complain about skateboarders skating in places such as the pavilion and square but also fail to provide sufficient facilities - two rivers meet has obviously just been constructed but for anyone who does not live in that surrounding area(Christchurch), it is a very long way - near to the Bournemouth town area that is accessible to all skateboarders and not packed with children unknowingly getting in our way(Which is obviously not their fault but with so little good skateboarding facilities there is usually a large amount of them.). My plan is to build a Southbank-Esque skatepark somewhere in Bournemouth, such as under the bridge near Turtle Bay, somewhere along the beachside or any other available and convenient area. This will move skateboarders away from public walking areas to a skatepark that encourages us to want to go there without being interrupted by children on scooters or bikes - an area for people who want to enhance their skateboarding abilities without interruption - and also gives the public something to look at as they are wandering past. If this skatepark is built correctly and has a lot of unique street features it will surely become the highlight of Bournemouth and attract skateboarding tourists all over the world, putting Bournemouth on the map once again. My goal is to provide a safe area for skateboarders to enjoy themselves without irritating the public. In 2006, 42 people riding skateboards died. Of those, 40 of them were not in a skatepark and 27 of those involved a motor vehicle. In other words, of these 42 deaths, 40 of them might have been prevented had the person been skating in a skatepark instead of the streets. Additionally - skateparks, if designed and constructed properly, are financially conservative and require very little maintenance - offering fantastic value for money. This skatepark will also create a place where skateboarders to meet other people who usually they might not meet, helping people expand their friendship groups and for some people, who may struggle with meeting new people, create an area to meet new people who share a similar interest. Please help out with this petition it has needed to have been started for so long.
Features of the skatepark could perhaps include:
- Stair sets ( big and small for beginners and more advanced skateboarders )
- Rails to grind
- Hubbas down stair sets
- Banks
- Ledges
- Manual pads
- A bowl
- Etc
Plans to raise money:
- The average price to design and build a skatepark is £37 per square foot. Skateparks rarely are more than £49 per square foot, and can sometimes be as low as £20 per square foot.
- So if this skatepark was roughly 8000 feet, an average size of a skatepark, it would cost roughly £290,000.00.
- Hopefully, we will be able to interest a company such as Active Dorset or the National Lottery etc. to help fund the skatepark
- Donations and fundraising events will also take place to help even just the smallest bit.
P.S
- 3D plans will be uploaded soon once I have created them using software, any ideas for things to be added will be greatly appreciated
