This year Dr. Mizell took over as the new principal of our school, Langston Hughes Middle School. Since then he has implemented unfair policies and made changes that do more harm then good. These changes do NOT actually combat any issues we were having the previous year, they just instill fear into the student body and make them feel even more so like school is a prison and that we are prisoners. This was backed up by one of the teachers "accidentally" letting it slip up that she thought the classrooms were "holding cells" during an 8th grade assembly. I know that many people are not happy with the new changes, especially those made with the schedule surrounding break and lunch, and I am not either. Being forced to stand outside in a small section, that if you leave you will have admin called on you, for 15 minutes with no exceptions is not fun. It is not what break should be, and I know many who would rather there be no break than the one we have now. Once again, there were many other ways to combat the issues we had with break last year, but they chose one that provides no fun at all and it has become just a nuisance to some at only a few days into the school year. Lunch has also suffered some changes, going from 4 lunches to 3. This change has caused some major issues. No longer are students able to enjoy their lunch and chat with friends, possibly even use the restroom. The longer lunch lines have left some with only minutes to eat and some without food at all. This is unacceptable, and with the PRINCIPAL HIMSELF overseeing these lunches, he should be able to recognize that. There is no room to sit anymore, and it is packed to the brim with students while teachers and the SRO guard the doors like this is jail. The dismissal is also an issue, and to hear our principal say that he thought it was a "success" was like a slap in the face. It's causing issues for people with after school activities, and just people in general. Possibly instead of this awful alternative to our regular dismissal, how about just policing the hallways? making sure kids don't get run over? They are adults that chose not to do their own jobs. I don't believe that there is a way to move forward with Mr. Mizell. He has introduced too many policies and changes that are not in our best interest to actually be good for Hughes. It isn't discipline, it is just ruining the experience for the ENTIRE student body. I believe we should act now before he starts to introduce even more things that will hinder our ability to enjoy school and friends.
