We strongly advocate for the inclusion of arts, entertainment and community programming in the new development plan of the Ridgewood Theater, located at 55-27 Myrtle Avenue, Ridgewood NY. As part of that effort we also advocate for the revitalization of the landmarked façade and the theater interiors. With easy access to the L & M trains, the Ridgewood Theater will become a successful arts & cultural venue. A historic theater such as the Ridgewood is a community cultural asset and community voices should be heard when new plans are being formed to redevelopment the property. We would like the new owners to consider development that is inclusive to community stakeholders. The Ridgewood Theater has provided entertainment for the Ridgewood/Bushwick and surrounding Queens community for over 90 years. We advocate the future Ridgewood Theater returning to its traditional role as a place where the community can congregate and future memories can be made.
The theater was designed in 1916 by famous architect Thomas W. Lamb, and the terra cotta façade was given landmark status in January 12, 2010 after lobbying from many community groups. The theater has been shuttered since 2008, and has suffered rapid deterioration. The interior of the theater did not receive landmark status and can be demolished if the new owners so choose.
We Love Ridgewood Theater envisions a revitalized local performing arts venue that will highlight the history of the community while at the same time providing vital economic and social benefits. We have been meeting with civic leaders and engaging arts & entertainment organizations that are interested in a future occupancy at the theater. The theater attracted the attention of Architecture for Humanity NY last December, whom have pledged to support the effort.
