Reduce Summer Tuition and Fees at UNR

Reduce Summer Tuition and Fees at UNR

The Issue

The University of Nevada, Reno is continuing to charge the same tuition and fees for their Summer Sessions as they would have previous to this national pandemic, COVID-19. The difference is all classes are online and campus remains closed. The University currently plans to begin reopening campus July 1, this is just days before the end of First Session Summer classes, so students taking classes do not have full access to campus and the resources it offers.

Therefore Mini Session and First session should have reduced tuition and fees. The following fees are being charged at the "normal" rate: Joe Crowley Student Union ($3 per credit), Associated Student Union of Nevada ($5 per credit), Technology fee ($9 per credit), Summer School Registration Surcharge fee ($3 per credit), and Fitness Center fee ($45). UNR students did not request partial refund of Spring 2020 tuition and fees in part because we understand the unprecedented nature of the suddenly moving classes online, among other reasons, but UNR has had time to review their decision regarding summer classes moving online and make necessary changes. During mini and first session students will not have access to the resources and events typically provided via the cost of these fees. Additionally online classes are in no way on par with in-person classes and therefore should not cost the same.

Upon reaching out to various UNR offices regarding these issues I received the response,

"Thank you for your email. These are mandatory fees per semester and per unit. Unfortunately students are still required to pay the fees even if they think that all the charges were not applicable. We have not heard anything or updates otherwise."

Based on this response and other responses I received it would seem UNR could still be making a decision on these fees so let's make sure our voice is heard regarding this decision and if the decision has been made let's petition for change!
