The Issue
Because some stories are written, but never told....
Studios are more than happy to dig beneath layers of dirt and stone to get their hands on a very special possession of ours: nostalgia. But among the bloated sequels, uncreative re-makes, extended franchises and endless adaptations the rewards are few and far between.
The Patakis, a spin-off of Hey Arnold!, was not a nostalgic attempt to profit off a pre-established audience. It was an extension of a show that was never quite finished. It was an idea that was created before the onslaught of unimaginative entertainment filled the big screens and poured into our living rooms. But while we are being fed our fond memories of a house too small for the family inside, or of a little boy too rich for his own good, and while we carry boxes of cereal of miniature bread and drink from a can of forgotten soda, why can't we demand a show of our own? Why can't we teach the hand that feeds us?
They turned down The Patakis because it was too "dark". That was then. This is now. We are an audience that can appreciate so-called "dramatic animation". Helga's story of love and loss deserves a new voice.
What I am asking for is a chance to give life to a show that was conceived too early. A show with a competent female protagonist, a mature backdrop, and a quirky sense of humor.
Lets call for Netflix to take the challenge and resurrect The Patakis. There's no better time than now.
